South Africa to New Zealand — the practical guide

NZ is the smaller, quieter alternative — but for SA tradies, nurses, and healthcare workers, it's often the fastest route to permanent residence. Here's the breakdown.

Lifestyle + safety

Low crime, stunning outdoors, mild maritime climate. Appeals strongly to SA families prioritising kids' safety and outdoor childhood.

Tradie-friendly

Tier 2 Green List opens direct work-to-residence for diesel mechanics, electricians, plumbers, welders. Critical labour shortage drives recruitment.

Healthcare hiring

Registered nurses, midwives, and radiographers move via Tier 2. NZ Nursing Council registration is the bottleneck — 4-6 months from application.

Frequently asked questions

Why is NZ such a strong fit for SA tradies and nurses?

NZ has a critical labour shortage in trades and healthcare, met partly through targeted Tier 2 Green List recruitment. The threshold to qualify is much lower than NZ SMC (just need an Accredited Employer + role-specific pay rate), and the work-to-residence pathway clears in 24 months. Diesel mechanics, electricians, plumbers, welders, registered nurses, and midwives are particularly in demand.

Do I need an English test if I'm a South African passport holder?

Yes. NZ does NOT exempt SA passport holders from English testing for SMC or AEWV. IELTS General 6.5 overall AND 6.5 each band is the SMC standard; PTE/TOEFL/OET equivalents accepted. Some Green List Tier 1 occupations have higher requirements (medical professionals: IELTS 7.0+).

How does NZ's points system actually work?

From October 2023, NZ uses a simplified 6-point SMC system: pick the highest single score from (a) Occupational Registration (3-6 points based on training years), (b) Qualification (3-6 points based on level), or (c) Income (3-6 points based on multiple of NZ median wage). Then add up to 3 points for NZ skilled work experience. Pass mark: 6.

What's the realistic cost of living difference SA vs NZ?

Auckland and Wellington are roughly 2-3x more expensive than Cape Town/Johannesburg in housing terms (NZ median house ~NZD 800k = ZAR 9 million). However, salaries are also higher (median household income ~NZD 95k vs SA ~ZAR 250k). Public services (healthcare, education) are free for residents. Smaller cities like Christchurch, Dunedin, and Hamilton are notably cheaper than Auckland.

Can my partner work?

Yes. Partners of AEWV holders typically receive an open work visa (work for any NZ employer) for the duration of the principal's visa. Children attend public school at domestic fees once the principal has held a work visa for 2+ years; immediate residents on Tier 1 get free public schooling.
