An Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) verifies that your foreign degree, diploma or certificate is valid and equivalent to a Canadian credential. Required for Express Entry eligibility and CRS points when your education was completed outside Canada.

An Educational Credential Assessment is a report issued by a designated organisation that authenticates your foreign educational credential and determines if it is equivalent to a Canadian educational credential.
If you completed your education outside Canada, you need an ECA to be eligible as the principal applicant for the Federal Skilled Worker Program (Express Entry), or to earn points for education completed outside Canada.
Your ECA must be less than 5 years old when you complete your Express Entry profile and when you submit your application for permanent residence.
In most cases, you only need an assessment for your highest level of education. For example, if you have a Master's degree, you only need an assessment for that degree. You do not need one for your Bachelor's degree.
You must get your assessment from an organisation or professional body designated by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Processing times and costs vary by organisation.
Most people use one of these five designated organisations. They authenticate and assess foreign educational credentials across a wide range of disciplines.
If your primary occupation is as an architect, doctor or pharmacist, you must use the designated professional body based on your occupation.
Your ECA report determines which level of education you can claim in your Express Entry profile, which directly affects your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score.
The points shown are for the education component of the CRS core/human capital factors. Your total CRS score includes additional factors such as age, language proficiency, work experience and spouse factors. See the CRS scoring guide for complete details.
If you completed your education in South Africa, the designated ECA organisation you choose will specify which supporting documents they require. Requirements vary by organisation.
Once you receive your ECA report, you must enter the results and reference number into your Express Entry profile. Keep your original documents and be ready to upload copies if you are invited to apply for permanent residence.
