Express Entry — Federal Skilled Worker

Canada's primary online system for skilled-worker permanent residence. Profiles are ranked by the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS); Invitations to Apply (ITAs) are issued per draw based on the cut-off score.

The three Express Entry streams

Federal Skilled Worker (FSW)

For overseas skilled workers without Canadian work experience. Most relevant route for South African applicants applying from SA. Requires a positive 67/100 selection-grid score and CLB 7+ language. Typical SA-applicant pathway.

Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

For applicants with at least 12 months of skilled Canadian work experience in the last 3 years. Useful if you're already in Canada on a work permit. Lower language threshold than FSW.

Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)

For trades workers (electricians, plumbers, welders, chefs, etc.). Requires either a job offer in Canada or trade certification from a Canadian province. Less common from SA.

The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS)

CRS is a 1,200-point ranking system. Once you're in the pool, IRCC issues ITAs to the highest-ranked candidates per draw. There's no fixed pass mark — each draw has its own cut-off. Recent 2026 general draws have ranged 470–510.

Required steps before submitting your profile

1. Educational Credential Assessment (ECA)

Submit your foreign qualifications to a designated body — WES (most common), ICES, IQAS, ICAS, or PEBC for pharmacy. Cost CAD 200–400, allow 4–6 weeks. SA Honours = Canadian Bachelor's in most assessments.

2. Language test

IELTS General (NOT Academic) or CELPIP for English. TEF Canada or TCF Canada for French. Min CLB 7 (IELTS 6.0 each band). Higher = more points. Results valid 2 years.

3. NOC code

Map your job to a National Occupational Classification (NOC) code at TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3. Software engineer = NOC 21231, civil engineer = 21300, accountant = 11100. Find yours at canada.ca.

4. Settlement funds

FSW requires CAD 14,690 in proof of funds for a single applicant (2026 figure, indexed annually); more for family. Bank statements covering 6 months. Waived if you have a Canadian job offer.

Notes for South African applicants

No bilateral IEC partnership — South Africans cannot use the International Experience Canada (Working Holiday) route.

Visa required for entry— even short-term visits need a TRV (visitor visa) and biometrics. eTA is only available if you've held a Canadian visa in the last 10 years or hold a valid US non-immigrant visa.

SA English-medium education generally qualifies for ECA without translation.

Levels Plan contraction — Canada is holding PR admissions at 380,000/year for 2026–2028, making CRS draws more competitive than 2022–2024.

PNP boost — a provincial nomination adds +600 CRS, effectively guaranteeing an ITA. Worth investigating provincial streams for which you might qualify (Alberta, Saskatchewan, Atlantic provinces).
