State nomination

2-Year Residency Obligation

You are generally expected to live and work in the nominating state or territory for the first 2 years after the visa is granted. This is a key condition of state nomination.

The 190 visa gives you 5 bonus points through state/territory nomination, making it ideal if your points score is close to (or just below) competitive thresholds for the 189 visa.

Factors states consider:

  • Whether your occupation is on the state's specific nomination list
  • Your work experience and qualifications relevant to the state's labour needs
  • Your connection to the state (prior residence, employment offers, family)
  • English language proficiency (some states require higher than the minimum)
