Australia, Canada, and New Zealand each maintain official lists of in-demand occupations. Being on a list is often the first eligibility requirement — not a guarantee of invitation, but a prerequisite for most skilled migration pathways.
Skilled occupation lists are government-published catalogues of jobs eligible for skilled migration. Each visa subclass specifies which list applies. Your nominated occupation must appear on the relevant list before you can submit an Expression of Interest or visa application.
Being on a list does not guarantee an invitation or visa grant. It means you meet the occupation eligibility criterion. Other factors — points score, skills assessment, English proficiency, age, and government processing priorities — determine whether you receive an invitation.
Australia uses the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO). The Department of Home Affairs currently uses two different ANZSCO versions depending on the visa subclass.
ANZSCO 2022
Used for:
These visas use the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL).
ANZSCO 2013
Used for:
These visas use the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL), Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL), or Regional Occupation List (ROL).
The Department of Home Affairs publishes a combined list showing which occupations appear on which list (CSOL, MLTSSL, STSOL, ROL), along with the ANZSCO code, assessing authority, and any caveats. Check the official skilled occupation list on the Department of Home Affairs website before nominating an occupation.
